Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some commonly asked questions that we have encountered to help you navigate treatment and/or sober livings.

Can I Use My Insurance To Pay for a Sober Living?

By law, insurance cannot pay for sober living. Insurance can only pay for treatment services which sober living is not included. This is important for anyone looking for a sober living. If your sober living agrees to take your insurance you should leave immediately.

How Can I Pay for Sober Living?

There are three main ways to pay for sober living, and all have to do with cash. You can pay in one lump some and potentially get a discount. You can pay on an installment plan if the sober living allows that. Or, you can borrow from friends or take out a loan.

Should I Join a Co-Ed Sober Living

Our answer is an emphatic NO! La Jolla Sober Living is a women’s only sober living. The reason being is that we believe that recovery has enough distractions on its own without having to throw in different stressors that may come with living with the opposite sex.

Should I Find A Sober Living That Requires Random Drug Tests?

Yes! We believe that those in early recovery need as much accountability as possible. At La Jolla Sober Living, we provide drug screens, not only for the client, but for the protection of all in the house. A safe and secure place free from drugs and alcohol is a must when looking for a sober living.

How Much Does A Home Cost?

That all depends on its location.

Many are in residential areas, making an effort to blend into a private living environment as much as possible. Rent is most likely comparable with the property values of the neighborhood. Also, it depends on whether the home is modestly equipped and furnished or if it provides luxurious amenities.

Each person is expected to pay for their own costs through employment. Some sober living homes will accept full-time students, possibly receiving income from family members or a school loan.

How Long Does Someone Stay?

When someone receives sober living help, the timeframe can vary greatly.

Some residents have probation officers and legal requirements to follow, others have nothing but their own personal needs to consider.

Most people stay just a handful of months, using the sober living home as a stepping stone between rehab and independent living. However, some may stay longer depending on their circumstances. As long as they are doing well in the home and keeping up with the requirements, many homes have no limits on someone’s length of stay.
